Cucumis melo (Melon) from Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm, Unterhaltungen aus der Naturgeschichte des Pflanzenreichs, vol. 4, t. 6 f. 11-13, 1812.
Common Names: Melon, Honeydew, Muskmelon, Casaba, Canteloupe, Oriental Pickling Melon, and numerous others (depending on aroma, flesh color and flavor, shape, and rind texture)
Description: Cucumis melo (Melon) is a member of the Cucurbi Family (Cucurbitaceae). The Hortus Kewensis, ed. 2, vol. 5, p. 345 did not provide an origin location and botanists are still trying to determin where it originated. The melons shown on textiles from 1750 to about 1850 vary widely in appearance and many more cultivars have been developed since that time.
